Tent Rocks National Monument (Kashe-Katuwe)

Kashe-Katuwe is a Cochiti term meaning white cliff. The peculiar geology of the area creates rock pedestals that look like tents -- thus the name Tent Rocks. The stone is consolidated volcanic ash dating back 7 million years and it is about 1,000 feet thick.

There are hundreds of 'tent' rocks

Each formation has - or had - a water resistant cap stone

The bands represent successive episodes
of volcanic eruptions

Slot Canyon

Part of the park was closed because the road was washed out due to the recent heavy rains. There is a trail that goes through a slot canyon and climbs 630 feet up to the top of the cliff.

A view from the top

There are some areas where the local  prehistoric Indians dug caves into the soft ash layers to serve as shelters.
